Gingers Beware

A Musing on Mississippi

Good. I don’t have to deny that Mississippi is a state now that they rejected the proposed amendment to define a fertilized human egg as a person. The broad and troubling ethical implications of this amendment were too much of a burden to bear. As well, for those of you out there who complain that the progressives are trying to take away all of our freedoms, what about the far right fringe groups who support this measure that would strip both men and women of certain reproductive freedoms? I’m not trying to start a political debate, it’s just something to think about. Those with an extreme agenda on both sides will always be taking the “rights” away from someone. It’s fine to believe that life begins at conception just as it is fine to believe that it doesn’t. The Mississippi proposed amendment was aimed at circumventing Roe v. Wade. Many pro-life proponents strongly disagree with Roe v. Wade, but I don’t understand why. Honestly, if you think about it, when your platform is all about freedom (which is what all American political parties platforms are) but your laws strip certain groups of said freedoms, then we have a problem. Roe v. Wade doesn’t strip away a person’s rights. In fact, it provides men and women certain reproductive freedoms that they then have the choice to pursue. The Roe v. Wade precedent does not require a person to do have an abortion, it just gives them the option to if they so choose. The personal decisions of others regarding reproduction should not be dictated by the government. If it were, then I would think we were characters in an Aldous Huxley novel.

As a scientist, I try to stay away from politics and look at things objectively (which is actually impossible, but a girl can try). A zygote is a ball of cells. These cells contain a nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes… the list goes on. These cells look just about the same as any other cell in the body, except its DNA is different. What these cells lack is a brain that can form connections, memories and conscious coherent thoughts. Is it logical to give a zygote more rights than an adult human being? No. We don’t give rights to bacteria, then why would we give rights to a zygote, especially when those rights seem to hold more weight than the rights of an adult human being? Sometimes the world seems to be going mad, but then people surprise you by voting down an amendment that could possibly make in vitro fertilization illegal, a miscarriage involuntary manslaughter, abortion for any reason (including rape and incest) illegal, and doctors performing abortions or DNC’s into murderers.

In related news, the world population has reached 7 billion people and counting, and the Duggar’s are expecting their 20th child.

How does any of this make any sense?
